Prepare for Autumn with Hammersmith Broadway

It’s official. Summer is on the way out and we know what follows next. For some, it’s a welcome break from the heat – certainly given the summer we’ve had this year. For others, the crunch of leaves under your feet signals the end of warm, long days and the start of darker nights. Whether you’re welcoming autumn to your doorstep or closing the door on it, here’s your guide to preparing for the season with us at Hammersmith Broadway.

Vitamin D3 Tablets | Holland & Barrett | £7.00

With less and less sunlight each day from now until the middle of winter, you become less exposed to the necessary vitamins it helps to produce. Sunlight is particularly important for vitamin D which is beneficial for the immune system as well as bone and muscle health.

The NHS recommends that in autumn and winter you should get your vitamin D from your diet as the sunlight doesn’t provide enough. Instead of incorporating creative and long-winded ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D, these tablets from Holland & Barrett work a treat!

Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Body Lotion | Boots | £5.99

Temperatures will (eventually) drop to winter levels by December which can cause problems for the skin. Cold temperatures and low humidity result in dry air, drawing moisture from the skin and drying it out, which is not healthy. It can sometimes cause dry and itchy skin.

With this body lotion from Vaseline, you can restore and maintain dry, dull skin and bring out its natural glow from the first application.

Great Scott’s Shoe Repair

There’s no doubt about it, the season of autumn means more frequent wet weather. As our wardrobe transitions from bright pastel colours to more earthy tones, the clothes and shoes we wear need to be weather resistant. By heading to Great Scott’s Shoe Repair, you can make sure your favourite shoes are fixed up properly before winter arrives.

Lofty Stitchy Black Knitted Jumper | Oliver Bonas | £55

Knitwear returns! Do you love the feeling of wrapping up in knitted clothing with a nice hot drink at home? Or maybe you see knitted clothes as just a necessity for you to keep warm in winter? Regardless, knitwear is going to be one of the most effective and stylish ways to stay cosy this autumn and winter season.

This must-have knitted jumper comes in black or lilac to suit your style and flatter from every angle.

YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum | Superdrug | £83

Summer tends to be the season for lighter and fruitier perfumes whereas autumn and winter often require a stronger, more intense scent – especially when we’ll be wearing more layers.

Black Opium from Yves Saint-Laurent offers a bold and expressive perfume, blending sensual jasmine and orange blossom with dark coffee and cacao notes generously sweetened with vanilla and wrapped in chocolate/woody patchouli. It’s a wonderful winter fragrance for those who love delicious coffee and sweet scents.

Are you coming to Hammersmith this summer?

There’s a lot happening at Hammersmith Broadway this summer and we’re excited to share all the awesome things!

Sounds In the Square

Every Friday, you can join us at Bradmore Square for Sounds in the Square. Hear live music from 6pm onwards, and enjoy amazing food & drinks in the sun. The headline performance on Friday the 19th of August will be Chrissy Day, an up-and-coming gifted singer. She’s currently making a splash in the London music scene and this will be a great opportunity to come down and watch her perform.

Chess tournament

Hammersmith Broadway is also delighted to announce our giant chess piece tournament on the 27th of August. In partnership with Hammersmith Chess Club, we will be hosting chess games open to the public and this friendly competition will offer London a chance to demonstrate its chess skills. The Hammersmith Chess Club, founded in 1962, is a friendly and sociable club with over 100 active players. It is one of the largest chess clubs in London and loves spreading the word about chess, inviting all to learn and play, no matter skill level, culture and nationality.

With that in mind, to help you prepare for the tournament on the 27th, we’re going to share our favourite chess move. Hopefully when you join us on the 27th you get the opportunity to try it out.

The Sicilian Defence
The Sicilian Defence is a great defensive move because it creates an imbalance for both sides. Rather than allowing white to have the initial positional advantage, this defensive move gives you a better positional grounding. Neither player has an advantage, but does allow you to strategically be in a better position.

Busking station

The busking station in the centre is continuing to grow! We’ve seen your piano performances, as well as all the support you’ve given to those performing. We love seeing the Hammersmith community come together, including the pianist influencer Melissa, who gave an amazing duet performance with Londonkeyboardist.

So, bring your best game for the chess tournament or come join in the piano fun at the busking station this summer! There will be activities indoors and outdoors, for the whole family. We can’t wait to see you there.

Splashing Colour Across Hammersmith Broadway: New Murals Installed By Danni Simpson

Australian artist, Danni Simpson’s explosion of colour has been splashed across three blank walls on the ground floor of Hammersmith Broadway. With the aim to ignite a creative spark in anyone who views her art, Simpson’s mural design for Hammersmith Broadway incorporates classic, vibrant illustrations with famous references of the wider area.

The first mural, ‘Pigeon’ features a colourful and fun pigeon design, a quintessentially British perception of London, aimed to brighten visitors’ days as soon as they pass by. The second mural ‘Let All The Children Boogie’ was designed with David Bowie’s Starman lyrics in mind. Bowie had close ties to Hammersmith, specifically when he took to the stage of the then Hammersmith Odeon to announce the end of his alter- ego, Ziggy Stardust.

The third mural fills the largest part of blank wall and features the phrase ‘Alright Hammersmith’, with a beautiful illustration of Hammersmith Bridge, an iconic landmark linking the southern part of Hammersmith in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Barnes in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Simpson expressed, ‘My style is defined by the illustrative line work that you’ll find within it. I like to use pops of colours to make it bright and always use a floral accent into each mural that I do. Last month, Hammersmith Broadway reached out to me in doing a mural for the space that we have here. They wanted to really brighten up the area and make it friendly to the general public, creating something that was positive and colourful for people as they were doing their journey through to work or going home.

So, for this piece we started off with ‘Pigeon’ which runs down at the start of the mural. Then, we move on up to ‘Let All The Children Boogie’, which is a song lyric from David Bowie from his last Ziggy Stardust performance at the Apollo. The very last mural ‘Alright Hammersmith’, features the Hammersmith Bridge, which leads you to the edge of the corridor.’

‘I think murals like this are important to the Hammersmith community as it really brightens up the space and adds colour to blank walls. It means people engage with the community and are able to tell the story of what happened within this area. So keep an eye out for these murals, and come and see them for yourself.’

This March We’re Paying Homage To The Incredible Women Of Hammersmith

In honour of International Women’s Day (March 8th) and Mother’s Day (March 27th), we will be celebrating the women of Hammersmith this March; be it loved ones, local residents, members of the community, or employees at Hammersmith Broadway.

IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. IWD has occurred for well over a century, has occurred for well over a century with the first gathering held in 1911. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

This year, the campaign theme for International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.

To kick-start our celebrations, here are three incredible female icons and local residents of the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham…

Alice Gilliatt

Alice Gilliatt was the first woman mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Fulham during 1934 – 1935. Born in 1880, Gilliatt was an active campaigner of women’s suffrage and a founding member of Association of Women Pharmacists.

Christina Broom

Born in 1862, Christina Broom was the UK’s first female press photographer and lived the majority of her life in Fulham. Following an accident leaving her husband unable to work, Broom took up photography to support her family, covering events across the UK, unlike most female photographers who largely captured studio portraits.

Marie Colvin

Well known for her work in The Sunday Times, journalist Marie Colvin covered places of war across the globe, often highlighting the cruelty that occurred. After losing her eye in 2001 after being caught in a blast in Sri Lanka, Colvin continued to report on wars until she passed away in Syria due to an artillery fire.

Do you want to nominate an incredible woman or group of women for a chance to be profiled on our socials? Send an email to emelia.rao@dsemotion.com, tag us on Instagram @hammersmithbroadway or drop us a DM to nominate!

Celebrating Hammersmith’s LGBTQ+ History

Throughout February, we’ve been sharing inspiring and educational content from our beautiful borough to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community and combat prejudice, all while celebrating its achievement and diversity.

Every Story Matters. London is a city where you are free to love who you love, and truly be who you are. Local artist and educator in LGBTQ+ history, Dan Vo, who works in the Victoria & Albert Museum, Gunnersbury Park Museum and the Sotheby’s Institute of Art, redesigned Hammersmith tube station’s sign to celebrate London’s LGBTQ+ community.

This roundel design is based on moquette textile patterns and uses familiar colours from across the TfL network to represent the Inclusive Pride, Trans Pride, Bi Pride and Intersex Pride flags. Dan renamed our station ‘Happiness’ because now you know the way, you can always journey to a place of happiness.

This sign is one of ten roundels to be installed across London, carrying positive messages and vibrant colours, as well as visual representations of the London LGBTQ+ community. Dan chose Hammersmith due to living in the borough for almost a decade and wanted to highlight the diversity found across Hammersmith & Fulham.

Celebrating Hammersmith History with our new mural

We’re bring to life the wonderfully rich and storied history of Hammersmith, with a huge mural throughout Hammersmith Broadway that captures snapshots of the area’s past. Illustrated and created by David J. McMillan, with his unique use of bold colour and handmade shape, the piece spans decades and depicts everything from iconic moments in rock, to the quintessentially British and distinctly London excitement of the boat race.

The mural is open to all for free within Hammersmith Broadway. Here are a few of its subjects:

Ziggy Stardust

On the 3rd July 1973 Hammersmith Odeon played host to a legendary and infamous gig, one that has gone down in musical history. It was there that David Bowie – performing as his provocative glam rock Ziggy Stardust alter-ego – would end a year long tour by thanking the captivated crowd and revealing that this would be the band’s last performance.

The concert, with its devastating farewell speech from Ziggy, was immortalised in film, capturing the emotion and fanaticism of a crowd who were not ready to say goodbye. Bowie would of course be back, a story of innovation and evolution that would define the rest of his career. He may have left the Ziggy Stardust persona behind, but the character and the songs still remain popular to this day.

Boat Race

London’s iconic annual Boat Race pits rowing crews from Cambridge and Oxford Universities against each other on a course that winds down the River Thames, with the shores of Hammersmith as one of its many backdrops. Hammersmith Bridge is a key landmark on the Championship Course, coming just before the halfway point of its 4.2 mile distance, and with 80% of crews who lead at this point going on to win.

Its popularity has endured for centuries, but hasn’t always come without problems. In 1870 around 12,000 people gathered on Hammersmith Bridge for the event giving rise to fears that it was not strong enough to support the weight of heavy traffic. The current bridge, designed by the civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette, opened in 1887.

Hammersmith Palais

Originally built as a ballroom dancing venue, Hammersmith Palais became a celebrated institution and cultural touchpoint within the area right from opening night in November 1919. Home at various points to an ice rink and a huge revolving dance floor, it was most treasured for the stage it gave to performers and musicians spanning decades. From the jazz stars of the roaring 20s, to the rock and roll of Bill Haley & The Comets and the revolutionary Beatles, to reggae showcases and the birth of the punk movement; every note and chord became the a building block of a landmark.

The Palais was eventually demolished in 2012, but it has been in immortalised in song by artists including Ian Dury and The Clash, and its spirit lives on throughout Hammersmith and in the shared experience of all who graced its floor.

Gustav Holst

British Composer Gustav Holst lived and worked in London at the end of the 19th century, and was fascinated by the big issues of his time – space, astrology and religion. Best known for his orchestral suite The Planets, he composed many other works across a range of genres, although none were as successful or became as beloved. The innovative work is instantly recognisable today, and it has been recorded at least 80 times subsequently by conductors, choirs and orchestras from all over the world.

Unable to support himself financially with his compositions, he played the trombone professionally and later became a teacher, and then director of music at St Paul’s Girls’ School, Hammersmith, from 1905 until his death. In 1913, St Paul’s opened a new music wing, and Holst composed his St Paul’s Suite for the occasion. The new building contained a sound-proof room where he could work undisturbed.

William Morris

William Morris is best known as the 19th century’s most celebrated designer. A key figure in the Arts & Crafts Movement, Morris championed a principle of handmade production that didn’t chime with the Victorian era’s focus on industrial ‘progress’. His work included wallpapers and textiles but also carpets, embroideries, tapestries, tiles and book designs. Morris was not only influential in his own time, but his legacy remains alive and important today.

Morris lived in Hammersmith at the Georgian brick mansion Kelmscott House from October 1878 until his death in October 1896. Originally called The Retreat, Morris renamed it after the Oxfordshire village of Kelmscott. It later became the meeting place of the Hammersmith Socialist League, where speakers such as Peter Kropotkin, George Bernard Shaw and many other socialist pioneers lectured, usually followed by a rigorous debate lead by Morris.

BBC Riverside Studios

The Riverside Studios at Hammersmith, London, started life as an iron foundry and was converted into a film studio in 1933. The site, with its two large studio spaces was purchased by the BBC in 1954 from the Alliance Film Company, initially as a temporary measure while the equipment at the studios at Lime Grove was being upgraded.

The studio is where colour television was first broadcast by the BBC in the 1960s; and is also renowned as the recording location for many iconic programmes, including the science-fiction classic Quatermass and the Pit, early episodes of Doctor Who, and children’s favourite Play School. The whole complex was in regular use until the early 1970’s when additional studios were completed at Television Centre. The BBC moved out in 1975, and a charitable trust formed by Hammersmith and Fulham Council took over.

Sounds in the Square this September

Bradmore Square’s unmissable lineup of live music continues throughout September, with an eclectic mix of local acts and artists, all with a great selection of al fresco food, cocktails and more from our amazing bars and restaurants. Celebrate National Burger Day!

This 26th of August sees the UK celebrate National Burger Day, giving burger-lovers across the country the chance to wax poetic about everything that makes their perfect burger. Type of bun, meat thickness, order of toppings, the ever-controversial tomato; all will be the subject of takes hotter than a flame grill. As long as we can pick it up in one go we’re not going to argue.

From classic favourites to experimental eating experiences, here’s a rundown of the burger delights available at Hammersmith Broadway. Perhaps some will inspire and enrich your National Burger Day.

The Icon

The Big Mac is less a burger and more of a global cultural phenomenon, with over 14 billion sold worldwide since McDonald’s inception. We never need an excuse to go back to this iconic classic, but we also couldn’t think of a better tribute than to pick one up on National Burger Day.

The Korean

Pelicana brings the unique flavours of Korea to Hammersmith, with their signature fried chicken an essential part of the country’s food culture. As connoisseurs of everything arriving between two bits of bread, we’ve gone for their Deli Burger, tender and crunchy chicken fillet coated in Pelicana’s sweet chilli sauce.

The Vegan

Your friends may argue that your burger must include meat, but with incredible vegan options like Leon’s LOVe Burger, who needs friends? The burger the world needs now, topped with LOVe Burger sauce, mustard mayo, tomatoes, pickles and a slice of smoked Gouda-style vegan cheeze.

The Luther

One for the more adventurous, the Luther is a mythical off menu item consisting of all the usual burger components, sandwiched between two glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Imagine the salty-sweet combo of pancakes and bacon, with everything turned up to maximum. Genius or madness? We’ll let you decide.
