Save on this year’s World Book Day

World book day is fast approaching, the event falls on the first Thursday of March each year and if your little one has just sprung the event on you, don’t panic.

It’s not uncommon to spend the day before the World Book Dat scrabbling to find a costume and at this point, the key to success is going with items you already have for a World Book Day outfit to relieve the panic and better for your pocket.

So we’ve created a small guide to assembling DIY costumes of your kid’s favourite books.

Harry Potter

Remaining one of the most popular children’s books, you’ll see a few Harrys wandering around the school dates this World Book Day.

If you want to save money on a Harry costume, start with a pair of school trousers and a shirt, and add some burgundy and yellow accessories to add that Gryffindor touch.

The glasses are a key element of Harry’s signature look; some parents choose to draw them on with face paint or make their own frames from tin foil or black paper. To complete the look, draw on his scar and repurpose a chopstick or twig.

You can easily substitute a black cardigan or jacket for the robe. This applies to any character from the Harry Potter world, so pick your favourite character and see what you can find around the house to recreate their costume.

Captain Underpants

The beloved story by a well-known author features a mischievous character that can inspire a humorous costume.
To create the costume, dress the child in clothing that matches their skin tone, as the character’s outfit may not be suitable for school or winter weather. To complete the look, add a pair of white y-fronts over their clothes and tie a red blanket or sheet around their neck to serve as a cape.
For a more elaborate version of the costume, you can also include a bald cap, but it is not necessary for the costume to be recognizable.

Mary Poppins

You can create an impressive Mary Poppins costume using simple items such as an old hat, an umbrella, and a large bag.
To elevate the costume, you can add a bow tie, a long skirt, and some flowers.

Ways to save money this winter – Tesco Edition

Households across the country have come under pressure from what is being described as the sharpest rise in not just food prices but, the soar of energy prices as well. Affording our usual weekly shopping has become harder and many households are searching for ways to reduce their outgoings as well as finding cheaper alternatives or having to sacrifice on some products.

Our shopping habits are changing with aim of saving some money, although it’s now more important than ever to do your homework before going to the supermarket in order to save some money over time – it all adds up.

Tesco is famous for their tagline ‘every little helps’ and winter, it really does ring true. Tesco is doing a lot to help shoppers spend less and have offers, schemes and many others methods to help us spend less with everyday values.

We’ve created a helpful guide to help you save money at Tesco:

Get a Tesco Clubcard

Start saving right away on your weekly shop at Tesco and sign up for a free Tesco Clubcard either in-store or online.

Tesco’s Clubcard offers you exclusive discounts in each Tesco store, available just for Clubcard holders, but you earn loyalty points every time you shop. These points add up and can be used to discount your next shop.

Tesco magazine for coupons

In most Tesco stores, you can pick up a free Tesco magazine at the entrance and inside you can find a selection of printed coupons to use when you shop.

You’ll also find product promotions and discounts which all tend to be around the same time the magazine is published. You won’t have to worry about the coupons being expired or no longer being valid.

Sign up for the Clubcard Christmas Savers

Another scheme helping you ease the cost of your Christmas shopping, is Tesco’s Clubcard Christmas Savers Scheme. The scheme allows you to earn Christmas bonus vouchers when you shop throughout the year, and use them during the festive season. Although it may be too late now, it’s something to keep in mind.

How does it work?

Tesco will look after the vouchers you collect when you shop and send them all in November just in time for the Christmas shop. In addition to this, when you top up your account with cash they will add a bonus to your account.

Top up £25 to receive a £1.50 bonus voucher
£50 to receive a £3 bonus voucher
£100 to receive a £6 bonus voucher
£200 to receive a £12 bonus voucher

Scan as you shop

Tesco also offers Clubcard members the opportunity to scan as you shop, helping you save time and money.

This method works well as it helps you stick to your budget and pack your shopping as you go around the store. No last minute price surprises and from the get-go you can see your basket total and not have the temptation of keeping something when you reach the till.

Tesco’s essentials range

Tesco also has an essentials range where you can save money by opting for Tesco essential items like bread, canned goods, toiletries and so much more.

These products are discounted to a fraction of the price in comparison to the branded competitors. Even though they’re discounted, you don’t compromise on quality or ingredients. You save more on your weekly shop and still enjoy the same delicious taste.

Look after your health this winter

The cold weather is slowly creeping up on us, bringing along the dreaded cold and flu that always seems to be going around. We’re more susceptible to illnesses like colds and flu viruses in the winter and viruses are more likely to spread, especially as we spend more time indoors and those morning commutes mean we’re closer in proximity to one another. The human body is an amazing thing, our immune system has its own natural defences and works wonders to keep us healthy, despite this, we need to make sure that our body is protected, nourished, and able to fight back.

For better health this winter, follow these tips to boost your immune system and look after yourself:

Exercise

There’s no surprise this is on the list, exercise provides more than just physical benefits, it’s also good for your mental well-being and in the coldest winter months can heighten your immune system. Even 30mins of exercise a day can massively help your body! Anything from walking, cycling, swimming, yoga and low-intensity workouts helps your blood flow, which speeds up your lymphatic drainage.

A good immune system needs good circulation of fluid around the body via blood and the lymphatic system (a small network of vessels that syphons excess fluid from your tissues and carries immune cells back to the bloodstream).

Healthy Diet

Healthcare professionals advise we change our shopping habits and switch the junk for more immune system-boosting nutritious foods. It’s important to increase our intake of foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories including broccoli, ginger, spinach, fish, blueberries, and turmeric. The aim is to not overload yourself with those Christmas treats, alcohol, takeaways and sugary treats which all upset our immune system instead, focus on eating fresh whole foods and high-quality proteins that provide your body with its essential nutrients. Luckily high-quality, fresh and affordable food can be found at Hammersmith Broadway. You can find all your essential nutritious groceries with loads of weekly offers for your weekly shop. Tesco has over 1,000 low prices locked until 2023, helping you find the best quality food at prices that help you save on every shop.

Vitamins

Essential vitamins are vital, increasing your intake can really give your immunity the much-added boost it deserves this winter. Different vitamins provide different benefits but the essentials you need are A, C and Zinc.

Vitamin A helps keep your body’s natural defences high, and vision in dim light, as well as keeps skin and the lining of some parts healthy.

Vitamin C supports your immune system and nervous system, but is also an antioxidant that helps your body absorb iron.

Zinc also supports your immune system, but mainly works at breaking down proteins in viruses and bacteria. Zinc plays a major role in increasing the activation of cells responsible for fighting infection.

If you’re looking for somewhere to find all the vitamins you need this winter, look no further than Hammersmith Broadway.

Sleep and rest

Possibly the most important one on this list and should be your main focus. During sleep, your body not only carries out major repairs and housekeeping but, releases protective cytokine proteins which help your immune system. Rest is essential for a well functioning immune system and the physiological process that provides the foundation for good health.

Prepare for Autumn with Hammersmith Broadway

It’s official. Summer is on the way out and we know what follows next. For some, it’s a welcome break from the heat – certainly given the summer we’ve had this year. For others, the crunch of leaves under your feet signals the end of warm, long days and the start of darker nights. Whether you’re welcoming autumn to your doorstep or closing the door on it, here’s your guide to preparing for the season with us at Hammersmith Broadway.

Vitamin D3 Tablets | Holland & Barrett | £7.00

With less and less sunlight each day from now until the middle of winter, you become less exposed to the necessary vitamins it helps to produce. Sunlight is particularly important for vitamin D which is beneficial for the immune system as well as bone and muscle health.

The NHS recommends that in autumn and winter you should get your vitamin D from your diet as the sunlight doesn’t provide enough. Instead of incorporating creative and long-winded ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D, these tablets from Holland & Barrett work a treat!

Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Body Lotion | Boots | £5.99

Temperatures will (eventually) drop to winter levels by December which can cause problems for the skin. Cold temperatures and low humidity result in dry air, drawing moisture from the skin and drying it out, which is not healthy. It can sometimes cause dry and itchy skin.

With this body lotion from Vaseline, you can restore and maintain dry, dull skin and bring out its natural glow from the first application.

Great Scott’s Shoe Repair

There’s no doubt about it, the season of autumn means more frequent wet weather. As our wardrobe transitions from bright pastel colours to more earthy tones, the clothes and shoes we wear need to be weather resistant. By heading to Great Scott’s Shoe Repair, you can make sure your favourite shoes are fixed up properly before winter arrives.

Lofty Stitchy Black Knitted Jumper | Oliver Bonas | £55

Knitwear returns! Do you love the feeling of wrapping up in knitted clothing with a nice hot drink at home? Or maybe you see knitted clothes as just a necessity for you to keep warm in winter? Regardless, knitwear is going to be one of the most effective and stylish ways to stay cosy this autumn and winter season.

This must-have knitted jumper comes in black or lilac to suit your style and flatter from every angle.

YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum | Superdrug | £83

Summer tends to be the season for lighter and fruitier perfumes whereas autumn and winter often require a stronger, more intense scent – especially when we’ll be wearing more layers.

Black Opium from Yves Saint-Laurent offers a bold and expressive perfume, blending sensual jasmine and orange blossom with dark coffee and cacao notes generously sweetened with vanilla and wrapped in chocolate/woody patchouli. It’s a wonderful winter fragrance for those who love delicious coffee and sweet scents.

Are you coming to Hammersmith this summer?

There’s a lot happening at Hammersmith Broadway this summer and we’re excited to share all the awesome things!

Sounds In the Square

Every Friday, you can join us at Bradmore Square for Sounds in the Square. Hear live music from 6pm onwards, and enjoy amazing food & drinks in the sun. The headline performance on Friday the 19th of August will be Chrissy Day, an up-and-coming gifted singer. She’s currently making a splash in the London music scene and this will be a great opportunity to come down and watch her perform.

Chess tournament

Hammersmith Broadway is also delighted to announce our giant chess piece tournament on the 27th of August. In partnership with Hammersmith Chess Club, we will be hosting chess games open to the public and this friendly competition will offer London a chance to demonstrate its chess skills. The Hammersmith Chess Club, founded in 1962, is a friendly and sociable club with over 100 active players. It is one of the largest chess clubs in London and loves spreading the word about chess, inviting all to learn and play, no matter skill level, culture and nationality.

With that in mind, to help you prepare for the tournament on the 27th, we’re going to share our favourite chess move. Hopefully when you join us on the 27th you get the opportunity to try it out.

The Sicilian Defence
The Sicilian Defence is a great defensive move because it creates an imbalance for both sides. Rather than allowing white to have the initial positional advantage, this defensive move gives you a better positional grounding. Neither player has an advantage, but does allow you to strategically be in a better position.

Busking station

The busking station in the centre is continuing to grow! We’ve seen your piano performances, as well as all the support you’ve given to those performing. We love seeing the Hammersmith community come together, including the pianist influencer Melissa, who gave an amazing duet performance with Londonkeyboardist.

So, bring your best game for the chess tournament or come join in the piano fun at the busking station this summer! There will be activities indoors and outdoors, for the whole family. We can’t wait to see you there.

Splashing Colour Across Hammersmith Broadway: New Murals Installed By Danni Simpson

Australian artist, Danni Simpson’s explosion of colour has been splashed across three blank walls on the ground floor of Hammersmith Broadway. With the aim to ignite a creative spark in anyone who views her art, Simpson’s mural design for Hammersmith Broadway incorporates classic, vibrant illustrations with famous references of the wider area.

The first mural, ‘Pigeon’ features a colourful and fun pigeon design, a quintessentially British perception of London, aimed to brighten visitors’ days as soon as they pass by. The second mural ‘Let All The Children Boogie’ was designed with David Bowie’s Starman lyrics in mind. Bowie had close ties to Hammersmith, specifically when he took to the stage of the then Hammersmith Odeon to announce the end of his alter- ego, Ziggy Stardust.

The third mural fills the largest part of blank wall and features the phrase ‘Alright Hammersmith’, with a beautiful illustration of Hammersmith Bridge, an iconic landmark linking the southern part of Hammersmith in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Barnes in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Simpson expressed, ‘My style is defined by the illustrative line work that you’ll find within it. I like to use pops of colours to make it bright and always use a floral accent into each mural that I do. Last month, Hammersmith Broadway reached out to me in doing a mural for the space that we have here. They wanted to really brighten up the area and make it friendly to the general public, creating something that was positive and colourful for people as they were doing their journey through to work or going home.

So, for this piece we started off with ‘Pigeon’ which runs down at the start of the mural. Then, we move on up to ‘Let All The Children Boogie’, which is a song lyric from David Bowie from his last Ziggy Stardust performance at the Apollo. The very last mural ‘Alright Hammersmith’, features the Hammersmith Bridge, which leads you to the edge of the corridor.’

‘I think murals like this are important to the Hammersmith community as it really brightens up the space and adds colour to blank walls. It means people engage with the community and are able to tell the story of what happened within this area. So keep an eye out for these murals, and come and see them for yourself.’
